Two months

two months. this is my estimated time on how long the rakyat will take in order to adjust ourselves to the new rate of petrol. during this two months, do expect:-
  • small demonstrations
  • dissatisfaction to government and PETRONAS
  • significant reduced numbers of cars on the road
  • lots of people using the public transports
  • less crowded shopping malls
then, everything will return back to its normal situation. more and more cars will be back on the road, shopping malls will once again be the center of attraction and congregation, and some hot issues will surface or resurfaced thus diverting rakyat's attention; and not forgetting the times when petrol price is rm1.92 will always be referred to as "those times".

after all, we Malaysians are adaptable lot, don't you think so?

Think about this

I was buying lunch at Burger King this afternoon, when a tall Caucasian guy, presumably European, came up to the counter. His first words were "Selamat Tengah hari (Good Afternoon)", to which the girl at the counter smiled and replied happily. I thought it was his polite nature of greeting in the local language, but no: he conversed fully in Bahasa Malaysia right to the end.

This sparked something in my mind, also being shameful. I mean, here we are, being on our soil, speaking our own language but why do we go into Starbucks or Coffee Bean and speak like we were shot out from America's butt? The people at the counter are not Americans/Europeans. They are Malaysian.

Fine by me if you speak English as a second language at home or at the office, but it's those who feel embarassed to actually speak Bahasa at places like these. I'd definitely prefer hearing someone saying, "Dik, bagi cappucino satu boleh? Kasi saiz kecik je la" than struggling to say "Eskius me, give uh uh uh...one Kofi Later and one ice machee-yato plis" and making a fool of yourself.

I mean here he is, this European guy who wasn't even born here, speaking Malay at a BURGER KING outlet. That's gotta say something don't you think?

The definition of empty cans

I just can't think of any introduction to this matter, so I'll just go straight ahead and hit it: Our KTM/LRT systems are getting worse by the second and nobody seems to be doing ANYTHING.

Being a regular commuter, taking the LRT and KTM frequently, I notice that a) the KTM service is getting more unreliable than ever and b) the ticket gates are just for show.

EVERYONE who takes the KTM would agree on how shitty the service is. Don't mind the locals talking about this, but what about the foreigners? The KTM services are (supposed to be) one of the most efficient and affordable mode of transportation to hotspots in KL, but where has the punctuality gone? Trains miss at least 2 cycles during peak hours, and the growing numbers of commuters packing up the small platforms, they actually think that announcing "Please be patient and to avoid congestion, please take the next train which will arrive.." wait for it.. "15 minutes later" will actually brainwash them all to stay calm and be as happy as an ending to a Disney movie. Easy for you to announce that in an air conditioned room...try being here on the platform, hot and sweaty.

I actually read this poster located at one of the KTM stations, highlighting the official KTM motto or pledges. One of it read in the lines of "Kami menepati masa (We are punctual)". I had a good laugh after that. I didn't know KTM had a sense of humor.

So what is it that causes this? Lack of coaches? Piss poor maintenance? If so, why can't the government afford maintenance? Don't they make money out of the tickets already? I don't really understand how it all rolls, and I do hope something is done, fast. You want to win the nations' votes? Get the KTM fixed.

Now on to the much more upgraded version of transportation; the LRT. In terms of punctuality, the LRT wins big time, bar a few glitches in the system. Basically, LRT wins this aspect as it is system controlled, and not manually driven like KTM. However, they seem to fail miserably at the ticket gates.

They are now encouraging (read: begging) the users to use Touch N Go cards instead of queuing up and buying one way tickets. Good initiative, but wait...out of the 7 ticket gates equipped with Touch N Go sensors, only 2 will work 90% of the time. Okay, fine, let's go and buy the tickets from the cool, awesome 20 year old high tech touch screen ticket machine! Yay! But what's this? Oh noes, I can only put in ONE measly note at one time. Aiyoh, no change la! So we all go back to lining up to the counter, buying the one way ticket. So much for encouraging us to buy Touch N Go cards.

Don't get me started on the passengers of KTM. I need a new BLOG for that.

What goes UP, MUST COME down

The cost of living, social issues, the crime rate and illegal immigrants - these are the issues that matter most to Malaysian voters. Aah, and don't forget 'roti canai' and 'teh tarik'! We can't live without these two things. I just hope, man doesn't start to kill for 'roti canai'.

Well, you can't be too certain. With the rising oil prices, the instability of the global economy coupled with the speculative nature of trade, the price of flour, butter and cooking oil can reach unimaginable heights! It will be so expensive, that all the 'roti canai' stalls and shops just can't afford to make it anymore. Then, there will be this hero, with the 'ROTI CANAI TERAKHIR'. People as far as Bukit Kayu Hitam and as remote as the jungles in Pahang will flock to this secret location. The rich will be keying the coordinates into their fancy GPS (and letting the machine tell them how to navigate in their own country). The geeks will be scouring Google Earth, cracking codes and sending satellites off course.

While all this is happening, the Chosen One at the secret location, with full of poise, takes the dough, sets it in his palm and slaps it onto the table. He dips his hand into a bowl of cooking oil and then starts to flatten the dough. With the grace of a ballerina, he takes the dough and starts swinging it in the air. The dough gets bigger, and bigger and bigger. Then he drops it onto the table, no holes or tears. PERFECT!

I guess if it does get down to this, the 'ROTI CANAI TERAKHIR' should be put in a museum, maybe in Egypt, beside a Mummy, in an incubated case, where the temperature and moisture is controlled to preserve the crisp yet soft texture of the 'roti canai'.

Anyway, back to reality. The cost of living is increasing at a higher and faster rate although the nations spending power has not increased accordingly. It is happening globally. Maybe what the government can do is to increase subsidies (although this is a bad option), reduce dependency on imported goods and encourage the sales of Malaysian made products. For this to happen, our local products have to really improve in quality.

Immigrants and crime have one thing on common, the police. If we clean up our police force, we can handle immigrants better, especially the illegal ones and significantly reduce the crime rate. Social issues, come hand-in-hand with globalization. As we become more hi-tech and more accessible to the world, social problems tend to creep in uninvited. The only way to curb this, is to educate the young at home and in schools (our schools? that is a story for another day).

Reunion Dinner at...Jusco??

I don't really know about this, but from what I saw last week, I think there's no such big a deal about reunion dinners nowadays. Proof? Wednesday night, at 8-9PM there were still Chinese people shopping for the new year. I don't know if they're not celebrating the new year cos they're not Buddhists or what, but it seems kinda odd. I remember the past 5-8 years or so, where during that time it's hard to see the Chinese at shopping malls as they are at their reunion dinners.

Looks like times-a-changing huh? Talking about chinese dinners, I still remember the peanut soup at the chinese wedding I went to the last 6 years...and the fried duck. Mmm...duck.
